In February 2017, Sri Lanka’s Right to Information (RTI) Act entered into force. The inclusive process through which the Act was crafted represents an exemplar of law-making in Sri Lanka, while the law itself constitutes a leading example of access to information legislation – ranking third worldwide, according to the Centre for Law and Democracy, and top in South Asia.

So what next for Sri Lanka’s RTI Act? For Sri Lanka’s authorities, the main challenge now is to implement the new law effectively. Right to Information: Discourse and Compliance in Sri Lanka, a joint analysis by DRI and Sri Lankan think tank Verité Research, looks at the next steps for access to information in Sri Lanka and, drawing upon international best practices, provides guidance for ensuring the smooth operation of the RTI Act.
