At a glance: Portugal's elections and the rule of law

This Sunday, 30 January, the Portuguese will go to the polls in a snap election the President announced last year.

Why are the elections taking place? How does Portugal fare on rule of law issues and why does it matter for the elections?

DRI's Jakub Jaraczewski and Nino Tsereteli highlight the most important developments in our quick overview.

We thank Susana Coroado, Researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon (ICS-UL), re:constitution fellow 2021/2022, and Madalena Resende, Professor of Political Science, NOVA University Lisbon, for their input.
