Tackling disinformation and online hate speech in the EU

With the Digital Services Act and the European Democracy Action Plan, 2020 saw the EU overhauling its regulation on internet platforms and its approach to tackling online hate speech and disinformation. However, over the years many member states have also developed their own approaches to tackling these issues.

This policy brief maps national and EU-level regulatory frameworks for addressing online hate speech and disinformation. In doing so, it provides insights into regulatory successes and shortcomings, where current strengths lie, and where the EU could further strengthen and complement national efforts.For more detailed information and an overview of the different EU-27 government approaches to tackling online disinformation and hate speech, check out our Digital Democracy Monitor Knowledge Hub.
