How does social media disinformation impact elections? Does hate speech affect political participation? How can we curb it while respecting freedom of expression?

Our Words Matter project examines disinformation and hate-speech trends in the MENA region to build evidence on their impact on elections and other political processes. We recently published the first report examining these social media trends during elections in Jordan and Lebanon. Other case studies from political processes in Tunisia and Sudan will soon be published.

Don't miss the fifth edition of Bread&Net, the first in-person conference after two years of remote events due to the pandemic. The community of activists in digital rights will gather in Beirut, Lebanon, from November 15-17 to discuss the challenges and opportunities coming from the digital world.

Together with our partners, we will present the results of this first on November 15, in an online panel between 10.30 to 12.00. We will discuss civil society efforts in forming networks in the MENA region to monitor and combat misinformation and hate speech on social media. We will also share:

  • Lessons learned from our analysis and the main challenges faced by the groups working in the field of information integrity.
  • Projects to combat hate incitement and disinformation in Tunisia, Sudan, Jordan and Lebanon.
  • Recommendations to curb harmful content

We will also participate in the "How to Monitor Harmful Content on Social Media?" conference. We will discuss misinformation and hate speech on social media and their impact on the MENA region during transitional periods, in addition to monitoring hate speech directed at women.
