​Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organisation registered in Berlin. DRI promotes political participation of citizens, accountability of state bodies, and the development of democratic institutions worldwide. 

DRI’s Digital Democracy team works to protect and promote healthy democratic debate online. Through our offices and projects around the globe, we monitor the effects of social media and other evolving technologies on public discourse; engage with governments, experts, and tech companies for effective regulation; and train citizen groups on how to assess their local digital environment and debates.  Our work touches on issues such as information manipulated, hate speech, coordinated sharing behaviour, platform design, and algorithms. Given currently expanding work, the Digital Democracy team is looking for a Research Associate to support its activities on several projects related to social media's role in elections and new online threats, including for research on disinformation threats and hate speech. Working with the broader team, the Research Associate  will conduct social media monitoring and analysis and will contribute to the broader programmatic work of the team.

Your tasks 
  • Support in the tracking of public online discourse and perceptions of conflict-related issues in the social media debates in Ukraine 
  • Track perceptions, discourse and narratives around the war, Russian politics, Western policies, refugee reception in the EU, perceptions about peace negotiations, and other major issues with a neutral, bi-partisan approach 
  • Work closely with a Policy Analyst with a regional specialty to contribute to an understanding of political discourse in the region via the production of both regular and in-depth reports on online discourse by overseeing the extraction, pre-processing, and analysis of social media data 
  • Oversee the building of data pipelines, including server-based python scripts for the automatization of social monitoring 
  • Contribute to internal working knowledge of social media monitoring by creating reusable, user-friendly scripts and thorough technical documentation and sustainable technical infrastructure 
  • Assist in analysis of social media data 
  • Perform other tasks as can be reasonably expected in the role
Your skills and experience 

Required:
​  

  • 2+ years of experience in data analysis 
  • University degree in data science, data or digital analytics, cybersecurity, statistics, data journalism, public policy, or related fields   
  • Working permit for Germany 
  • Proficiency with Python and SQL, including experience in server-based Python script automatization 
  • Proficiency with streaming APIs and social monitoring platforms (e.g. CrowdTangle) 
  • Experience with NLP, data visualisation, exploratory analysis, and sentiment analysis 
  • Knowledge of code/algorithms for text summarization, clustering, topic modelling 
  • Work experience in an office setting, ideally for an NGO 
  • Previous experience with political analysis
  • Ability to be flexible, well-organised, and self-sufficient  
  • Great written and verbal communication skills, with a diplomatic touch 
  • Ability to work as part of a culturally diverse team 
  • Full professional fluency in English 

Preferred:

  • Experience working with social media, especially Telegram, VK I.e. scripts, experience, knowledge of privacy policies and challenges 
  • Knowledge of digital democracy issues (online election manipulation, spread of mis/disinformation etc) 
  • Knowledge of additional languages (German, Arabic, French) is a distinct asset.
