Akkar Transforming: Empowering Young People and Farmers

In the heart of Akkar, a journey of empowerment is underway, led by our partner Akkar Network for Development (AND). A transformative programme is equipping the young people of Hrar with the knowledge and skills in the municipality and access to information laws, fostering accountability and active citizenship. The training will be followed by public debates with public officials such as municipality representatives and Union of Municipalities representatives as well as municipal candidates.

In Tall Hayat, in collaboration with local authorities, a joint committee is mapping local farmers to identify those eligible and help them enroll in a programme led by the Ministry of Agriculture in order to have official records for the farmers. This activity is giving young people in Tall Hayat the opportunity to support the farmers in their community. These initiatives are rewriting Akkar’s story, promising a brighter and more empowered future for its residents who for long have struggled with marginalization by their community.

One of the participants from Hrar said at the end of the Access to Information training: “It is very important for us to know about the existence of this law which, paves the way for accountability and civic responsibility. Previously, we requested information without knowing the proper approach and our request was rejected. This time, we will make sure to reach a more positive outcome.”
