Democracy Reporting International (DRI) is a non-partisan, independent, not-for-profit organisation registered in Berlin. DRI promotes political participation of citizens, accountability of state bodies, and the development of democratic institutions worldwide.
DRI is currently recruiting a full-time Research Officer – Digital Democracy (Sri Lanka) for its country office in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In collaboration with, and under supervision of the Programme Coordinator, you will conduct research on online political discourses particularly, in the context of Sri Lanka’s concluded as well as upcoming elections and around major ongoing political reform developments in the country.

Your tasks

  • Together with DRI’s HQ digital democracy team, programme experts, partners and DRI’s Sri Lanka team assess policy developments in the field and define what is relevant for democratic discourse and what DRI can do to respond;
  • Conduct contextual analysis and literature reviews and conceptualize the theory of change to develop research plans;
  • Conduct data collection ensuring data reliability and retention, in close coordination with DRI’s team of coders and programme experts supporting the research;
  • Develop the classification and coding system of data for relevant research questions and prepare an efficient system for hand-annotation of data in line with DRI’s methodology and guidelines;
  • Analyse data and produce visualizations to develop stories into insights, and findings, as well as develop recommendations;
  • Produce written reports and collaborate with programme experts to verify the correct depiction of research findings;
  • Co-facilitate social media awareness/literacy workshops and briefings for targeted stakeholders, in cooperation with programme experts, partners, DRI’s district and national coordinators, prepare presentations and present the findings and recommendations from DRI’s social media analyses;
  • Present DRI work and findings in relation to digital democracy research at DRI sessions and at public events held online and offline;
  • Assist the team with identifying resources for research and study on digital democracy and assist in data collection for monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) processes related to the research activity under various projects and, provide input for communications as requested;
  • Assist in tasks such as follow up and approval of deliverables and ToRs of contracts of service contract providers and other related admin tasks as requested;
  • Take part in trainings to further skills related to the role as research officer in digital democracy as requested by senior management;
  • Other relevant duties, as required in line with DRI ways of working.

Your skills and experience

Required:

  • University degree in social science, political science, international relations or other relevant fields;
  • At least five years of experience in research including the ability to use open source or private social listening tools;
  • Demonstrated expertise in tools for data analysis and data visualization (such as R, Python, or Tableau) will be an added advantage;
  • Knowledge of the (social) media landscape and political/social/religious influencers in Sri Lanka;
  • Relevant professional experience in political analysis of democratic reforms including around elections or post war transitional processes will be considered an asset
  • Relevant publications on the influence of social media in politics will be considered an asset;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Sinhala and/or Tamil.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience of building the capacity of civil society or other actors on civic-tech topics.
