Since Hungary’s FIDESZ party gained power in 2010, the Council of Europe and other bodies have expressed serious concerns about legal changes brought about by the government, which claims that they have in line with its European obligations for human rights and democracy. But beyond these legal wranglings, what have these changes meant in practice? Hungary’s Prime Minister Orban declared Hungary to be an illiberal state – what are the implications?
