Pakistan Media Guide: Reporting on Human Rights

Summary

The Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) of the European Union (EU) allows developing countries to pay less or no duties on their exports to the EU. GSP+, a component of GSP, offers additional trade incentives to developing countries already benefiting from GSP – but in return for the implementation of to 27 international covenants, treaties and conventions. The significant economic incentives that GSP+ offers have already motivated the Pakistani government to implement important human rights reforms, and Pakistan’s desire to maintain the status could prove an effective and unique angle from which the media can approach human rights.

The guide provides the Pakistani media with a key resource for effective reporting on the human rights situation in the country. In addition to providing a background on human rights and Pakistan’s progress towards them, the guide offers accessible data that should prove helpful for journalists hoping to shed a well-informed light on neglected issues. While the multi-faceted issue on human rights could be approved in many ways, this report focuses on Pakistan’s GSP+ status and the human rights upon which it is conditioned.
