What’s Up with Ukraine’s Central Election Commission?

Ukraine’s Central Election Commission (CEC) is a crucial institution designed to ensure the observance of democratic principles in the electoral process. Yet it has been subject to political manipulation and is awaiting reform to restore its credibility.

Most of the CEC’s members were appointed during the Yanukovych era and their tenure expired in 2014. In June 2016 President Poroshenko nominated candidates to replace them. But are democratic principles being observed and a proper balance between representatives of the governing coalition and the opposition respected, or are previous flaws being perpetuated?

The fact sheet shows the current composition of the CEC, the changes being proposed, and suggestions for enhancing the impartiality and transparency of the appointment process.
